Witt Swamp Preserve’s main loop trail is an easy hike covering 0.9 miles with 22 feet of elevation gain. This short loop trail meanders through mature hemlock, white cedar and mixed hardwood forest buffering Witt Swamp. The 141-acre preserve, owned by the Western Foothills Land Trust since 2004, is named after Benjamin Witt, Norway’s first blacksmith. The site is perfect for quiet reflection, forest study, and fungi study in the fall. Wildlife to watch for includes red squirrels, wood ducks, and a variety of warblers. For expanded hiking options, a 4-mile trail network includes a 3-mile loop trail, a 3/4-mile boardwalk, and a connection to Shepard’s Farm Preserve.
