The White Cedar Swamp Trail is a flat, leaf-covered pathsuitable for easy hiking. It is less than one-half mile from Decorie Drive to the actual swamp, thoughthe cedar bog and stands of white cedar trees are approximately one and a half to two miles out from Decorie Drive down the Alton’s Way Trail. There are numerous spur trails that meander off in different directions, offering an out-and-back or exploratory network hiking experience. The highlight of this area is therare cedar wetland supporting several white cedar stands as well as a small cedar bog and open wetland where Atlantic white cedar is associated with calcareous wetland species. The conservation area contains the rare Hessel’s Hairstreak Butterfly, along with other protected species: two types of salamanders and the Eastern Spadefoot Toad. Wet areas spring up quickly after any rainfall, sovisiting in the winter, in early spring, or in late fall is suggested. Be aware of ticks and mosquitoes. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are excellent ways to travel in the winterwhen water-logged summer sections become accessible.
