Whately Center Woods This is an easy routefeaturing a 1.4-mile loop trailmaintained by Kestrel Land Trust. The trail system offers two options: a shorter hike of 0.88 mileora longer loop of 1.1 miles. The 120-acre woodland features many mature trees, small streams, wetlands and vernal pools, withstream views and thick mountain laurel alongside the trail. The route includestwo footbridges crossing small streams, views of a small waterfall, and a number of boardwalks and bridges providing wetland views. Wildlife in the area includes black bears, coyotes, bobcats, porcupines, weasels, turkeys, ruffed grouse, and great horned owls. The area is open dawn to dusk year-round, with dogs permitted on leash.
