Wapack Trail Northern Terminus The Wapack Trail is one of the oldest public, interstate hiking trails in the United States, opening in 1923 and following the Wapack Range north-south for 21 miles (34 km) between Mount Watatic in Ashburnham, Massachusetts, and North Pack Monadnock mountain in Greenfield, New Hampshire. The Northern Terminus is located in the Wapack National Wildlife Refuge, located about 20 miles west of Nashua, New Hampshire and encompassing the 2,278 ft. North Pack Monadnock Mountain. Difficulty & Type: Wapack Trail is considered a hard hike that covers 21 mi with an elevation gain of 4,560 ft, taking about 11–12 hr to complete. The trail is a point-to-point route. Scenery & Highlights: The trail runs alongside ponds and wetlands, through dark woods and open blueberry fields, past stone walls and cellar holes, and across ledges and summits with fine views of Boston to the hills of Vermont. The Wapack Trail passes over the top of North Pack Monadnock and offers outstanding opportunities for viewing migratory hawks and a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.
