Upper Paugussett State Forest The Upper Block encompasses approximately 800 acres on the western shore of Lake Lillinonah, and offers multiple hiking options with varying difficulty levels. The blue-blazed Lillinonah Trail is 6.2 miles and is entirely within the upper block, making it arugged trail with frequent changes in elevation. The trail parallels Lake Lillinonah, a 1,547-acre lake created in 1955 by the construction of the Shepaug Dam, with a 3.1-mile scenic section designated for excellent views of the lake, river inlet, dam, and three bordering towns. The Upper Gussy Trail is a 1.8-mile trail created for mountain bikers and equestrians, and Brody Road offers hikers numerous loop opportunities. The scenic trail section is a nesting habitat for bald eagles and is annually closed from December 15th to March 15th.
