Swan Island, Richmond, Maine Swan Island is a 7.7-mile loop trail near Richmond, Maine, offeringtrails passing through the woods and open fields near the Kennebec River. The loop covers 7.7 miles, taking approximately 2.5–3 hours to complete with an elevation gain of 505 feet, making it a moderate difficulty hike. Along the route, hikers will pass small ponds, interpretive signs, and a fire lookout. The island is home to nesting bald eagles, deer and waterfowl, plus 6 historic homes dating back to the 1700s. A 0.6-mile loop close to the campground, the Beaver Pond Trail, is wheelchair accessible. Note: This area is only accessible by boat, andthe island is open from May 1 to the end of October.
