Sunset Ridge Trail, Underhill, Vermont This hard hike covers 5.1 miles with an elevation gain of 2,539 feet, thoughthe Sunset Ridge Trail alone is 3 miles to the summit. The full out-and-back route is about 6.5 miles, taking hikers through forest lands, over rivers, and past a few false summits. The trail ascends gradually through forested terrain before emerging above the treeline, offering expansive views of the Champlain Valley, Lake Champlain, and the Adirondacks. The upper portion features minor rock scrambling and hiking on exposed rock faces. The summit itself is the highest peak in Vermont and offers 360° panoramic views of the surrounding areas including the town of Stowe. The trail is part of a larger network that includes the Long Trail and Halfway House Trail, allowing for loop options.
