The Southern New England Trunkline Trail runs 22 miles from Douglas State Forest to Franklin State Forest, making ita recreational trail along a former railroad corridor. The trail is considered a moderate hike that covers 23.5 miles, with an elevation gain of 980 feet, suitable for out-and-back or point-to-point adventures across multiple access points. This relatively flat trail provides a safe, ever-expanding area for year-round activities for people of all ages and abilities. The trail passes through the towns of Franklin, Bellingham, Blackstone, Millville, Uxbridge and Douglasand features diverse scenery includingdense woodlands, open fields, and wetlands, hosting white-tailed deer, red foxes, and bird species including the Eastern Bluebird and Barred Owl. Notable features include a short side trail providing access to the Blackstone Canal’s Millville Lock, the best preserved on the canal. The trail is popular to bicyclists, cross-country skiers, equestrians, and hikers, with surface conditions varying by section—ranging fromeasy, flat paved rail trailtohard packed dirt, gravel, sand, cinder and rocks.
