Rumford Whitecap Mountain Preserve offers two trails of moderate difficulty that lead to the site’s signature bald summit. The most popular route is a 5.3-mile out-and-back trail that is generally considered moderately challenging. Hikers are rewarded with panoramic views and abundant blueberry thickets, withviews of the Mahoosuc Range, White Mountains, Androscoggin River valley, and Mexico Hillsfrom the rocky summit. The preserve is home to part of the largest red pine woodland in the state, andoffers opportunities for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing in winter, making it a four-season destination. Two trails—the Iles Trail (marked with red/orange flags) and the Starr Trail (marked with yellow blazes)—can be hiked as separate routes or combined for a loop.
