Rockingham Recreational Trail Parking (Depot Road, Candia, NH)This is an easy rail trail spanning 28 miles with a low gradient. The predominantly smooth and level hardpack trail links downtown Manchester to the former railroad station of Rockingham, merely a couple of miles south of Newmarket. The Depot Road access point near Candia and Raymond serves as a key trailhead along the Rockingham Rail Trail and includes a gravel parking area with a wide unpaved trail surface suitable for walking, cycling, and seasonal snowmobiling. About 8.5 miles from the Massabesic Lake trailhead, trail users will cross paths with railroad history at a marker for the demolished site of an 1889 railroad station, and the railbed rises above the forest floor in places while other stretches thread through high-walled cuts blasted through New Hampshire’s famous granite. Natural features include mixed hardwood forest, emergent wetlands, and intermittent rock walls.4 miles from East Candia is a surviving railroad station in Raymond, where trail users will find plenty of places for food and refreshments near the depot and on the outskirts of town in 1 mile.
