Quoddy Head State Park This 541-acre state park features 5 miles of hiking trails, extensive forests, two bogs, and the iconic red-and-white striped West Quoddy Head Lighthouse. The park offers trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. The Coastal Trail is a 4-mile round-trip moderate hike with steep rocky sections and spectacular ocean views, passing Gulliver’s Hole (a narrow chasm formed from erosion of volcanic rock), High Ledge (a 150-foot bluff), and Green Point (a ledge outcropping with surging tides and pounding surf). The Coast Guard Trail is 0.9 miles of easy-moderate terrain, with the western half accessible, offering high cliff overlooks and views across Lubec Channel. The easy Inland Trail is a 0.75-mile round trip through conifer woods with moss and lichen, leading uphill to High Ledge and Gulliver’s Hole. The Bog Trail is an easy 1-mile round-trip with a raised boardwalk that showcases forest and wetlands. For a few weeks around the equinoxes, West Quoddy Head is the first location in the United States to see the sunrise. The park affords some of Maine’s best wildlife-watching, with visitors in summer able to spot whales offshore and various seabirds roosting on Sail Rock.
