Quinnipiac River State Park in North Haven features an easy hiking trail covering 2.4 miles with minimal elevation gain of 36 feet, takingabout 0.5–1 hour to complete. The Quinnipiac River Trail is an out-and-back routethatsometimes follows the river bank and sometimes goes somewhat upland. The park features trails that meander along the Quinnipiac River with opportunities to encounter wildlife such as deer and wild turkeys. A notable historic feature: the area was home to a riverside community that started in the 1920s, and old fences, foundations, concrete slabs, and ornate steps remain visible among the trees. The trail is not routinely maintained, and during summer months it is often hard to follow, withseasonally muddy forest floor conditions due to the active floodplain.
