Mc Lean Game Refuge was established in 1932 by U. S. Senator George P. Mc Lean on his former private hunting lands to preserve the natural landscape of Simsbury and the surrounding area. The refuge offers over twenty miles of forest roads and hiking trails that are open to the public for passive recreation. The Firetown Road trailhead provides access to the western portion of the refuge, which featuresout-and-back trails west of Barn Door Hills Road. The well-marked trails provide a moderate challenge, making them suitable for hikers of various skill levels. Key highlights include a small waterfall and a series of cascadesaccessible via the Eddy Trail, along withexcellent birdwatching opportunities, with species including pileated woodpecker, blue-headed vireo, winter wren, hermit thrush and Blackburnian warbler commonly seen. The Game Refuge hours are sunrise to sunset.
