Otter River State Forest Otter River State Forest is a popular summer destination for day trips and camping. The facility offers a network of multi-use trails suitable for easy to moderate hiking. The Wilder-Mc Kenzie Nature Trail is an easy, 2.5-mile round-trip trail starting from Beaman Pond campground, while the Lake Dennison to Beaman Pond trail is another popular option at 2.9 miles with an elevation gain of 269 feet. Trails lead through the surrounding hardwood stands, marshland, and pine groves, andyou can connect directly to Birch Hill Wildlife Management Area, a nature reserve with over 9,000 acres of woodlands. The forest contains catbirds, warblers, herons, and vireos, as well as white-tailed deer, beavers, and chipmunks. Beaman Pond offers swimming opportunities, andmany trails are multi-use, allowing for mountain biking and cross-country skiing.
