Old Mill Trail is an easy hike covering 3 miles with 180 feet of elevation gain, making itan out-and-back trail along the upper reaches of the Housatonic River. The first 0.7 miles is a flat, gravel trail that follows the river north to a bench platform, while continuing on is a narrow hiking trail for 0.8 miles, crossing Route 8 and following the river downstream. The trail showcases local history and remnants of the area’s industrial past, withcharming pedestrian bridges offering serene water views and historic remnants including an old dam and other artifacts from nineteenth-century textile mills. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with mink, deer, red squirrels, hawks, owls, and songbirds found throughout the hemlock groves lining the trail. The first half of the 1.4-mile accessible section is built to accessible stand ards, consisting of a flat gravel walking trail, andthe trail is especially good in spring and summer.
