New Discovery State Park Marshfield, Vermont Located in the 27,000-acre Groton State Forest and built by the CCC in the 1930s, New Discovery State Park offers varied hiking options withlots of great hiking trails through the Groton State Forest. The Big Deer Mountain trail is a moderate hike up to Big Deer Mountain, two miles round trip with mostly level hiking and steep ascent in the final 200 yards. The Owl’s Head Trail is a moderate 4.7-mile round trip hike with 682 feet of elevation gain that leads to a stone fire tower offering views of Kettle Pond. The park featurestwo open-air log shelters with fireplaces and picnic tables, andremote camping along the shores of Osmore Pond where breeding loons are found in the summer. The area is home to over 100 species of birds, making it excellent for wildlife viewing and nature exploration.
