Mount Major Trail, Alton, New Hampshire Mount Major is a moderately challenging hikewith several route options. The Main/Mount Major Trail is 1.5 miles one way, whilea loop trail covering all routes is approximately 4.0 miles. The primary routeclimbs steeply through second growth and over ledges, with some steep scrambles near the top. At 1,786 feet, the summit offers views among the best in the southern part of the state for the effort required. There are amazing views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains along the way. The summit features ruins of a stone hut called “Mr. Phippen’s Hut”, built in 1925. This trail is entirely forested until the summit and quite rocky throughout with lots of glacial erratic rocks along the way. Multiple trails are accessible including the Mount Major Trail, the Brook Trail, and the Boulder Loop, allowing hikers to customize their route. This is a very popular area for hiking and snowshoeing, so arriving early is recommended, especially during peak season.
