Mount Major State Forest, Alton, New Hampshire Mount Major is a moderate hike with a 3.2-mile loop and 1,140-foot elevation gain. Multiple trails (Mount Major Trail, Brook Trail, and Boulder Loop) lead to the summit providing round-trip options ranging from 3 to 3.9 miles. The summit reaches 1,786 feet above sea level and features the ruins of a stone hut called “Mr. Phippen’s Hut”. A short hike up Mount Major provides spectacular panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee, withextensive views of lakes and mountains in every direction, including Copple Crown Mountain and the Moose Mountains to the east, the Ossipee Range to the north, and the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains across the lake. The trail is entirely forested until the summit and quite rocky throughout with lots of glacial erratic rocks. Upper ledges are steep and dangerous in wet or icy conditions. This is a very popular area for hiking and snowshoeing, anddogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
