Mount Apatite Trailhead, Auburn, Maine Mount Apatite Park is a 325-acre wooded park located in the western portion of Auburn, offering trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. The popular Mount Apatite Blue Loop Trail is a moderate hike covering 3.1 miles with 295 feet of elevation gain, while the Mt. Apatite Trail is an easier option at 2.5 miles with 91 feet of elevation gain. An extensive network of forested trails link aband oned quarries, gleaming slag piles, steep ledges, and giant boulders. Amateurs may still search the mine tailings for Apatite, Tourmaline, and Quartz specimens (specific rules apply). Note that the trails are not well marked in some areas, and downloading the map ahead of time is helpful for navigating.
