This moderately challenging out-and-back hikeoffersa 3.7-mile round tripto the scenic summit of Peak Mountain, also called Copper Mountain, a traprock (volcanic) mountain located in East Granby. The Metacomet Trail is a 62.7-mile Blue-Blazed hiking trail that traverses the Metacomet Ridge of central Connecticut as part of the New England National Scenic Trail. The route featuresgreat viewpoints to the West and unique basalt rock formations, withridges composed of trap rock (basalt), an extrusive volcanic rock formed 200 million years ago that weathers to a rusty brown color. Historic features visible from the ridge include Old Newgate Prison museum and copper mine, located just below Peak Mountain, which makes this trail ideal for combining natural scenery with local history.
