Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge This 295-acre refuge offers 3.3 miles of easy to moderate trails, making it accessible for hikers of various experience levels. The shorter loop can be completed in 45 minutes to an hour, while the full trail system takes two to three hours depending on speed and how often you stop. The refuge features a loop trail system thatwinds through upland forests, wetlands, streams, ponds, and open meadow. The centerpiece of the property isthe 11-acre Carr Pond, situated entirely within the bounds of the wildlife refuge, whichis home to river otters as well as many types of freshwater fish and aquatic invertebrates. Wildlife to watch for includes deer, fox, coyote, red squirrel, and birds such as Wild Turkey, Hooded Merganser, Eastern Bluebird, Barred Owl, Black-throated Green Warbler, Ovenbird, Scarlet Tanager, and Baltimore Oriole. The Maxwell Mays Interpretive Trail includes seven investigative sites, each clearly marked by a numbered post, making it educational as well as scenic.
