This 8-mile easy rated trailis an 8.8-mile section from Barre through Oakham to Glenwood Road in Rutlandoffering ahard packed stone dust surface suitable for bikes or walkers. The trail featuresthe Charnock Tunnel installed in 2006, the Pommogussett Tunnel installed in 2011, and the White Valley Bridge over the Ware River installed in 2013. A major highlight isthe Charnock Cut, which the railroad cut through significant rock ledge, now forming the highest point of the MCRT—a scenic section with lush moss and ferns. The trail passes many beautiful ponds along the way, with a 0.1-mile on-road route on Miles Road in Rutland. A connection in Rutland to the Midstate Hiking Trail, a 92-mile scenic footpath, is available between the two crossings of Whitehall Road.
