Machimoodus State Park (Entrance)Machimoodus State Park features a moderate hike covering 2 miles with 223 feet of elevation gain, thoughmost trails in the park are considered easy and suitable for families, with paths generally wide and following old farm roads with gentle terrain. Four and a half miles of old farm roads and trails crisscross the 300-acre park, offeringloop hike opportunities with color-coded trails connecting to form circuits of varying lengths. The park spans uplands, woodlands, meadows, river and cove waterfronts with scenic vistas overlooking the Salmon River and Salmon River Cove. Key highlights include Mount Tom at 314 feet above sea level, which features two lookout points offering vistas of the Connecticut, Salmon, and Moodus Rivers and Salmon River Cove with opportunities to spot geese, mute swans, mergansers, bufflehead, black duck, mallard, and bald eagles in season. The park’s ponds and vibrant wildflower meadows draw birds, pollinators, and birdwatchers all four seasons of the year. The first part of the park leading to the ponds is handicapped accessible, making it a good option for strollers and visitors with mobility challenges.
