The Loop Trail begins roughly 5.8 miles down Byron Roadand providesa challenging routeto explore the Tumbledown Mountain area. The Loop Trail ascends to the Tumbledown Ridge Trail from a trailhead on Byron Road, and by descending on the Brook Trail you can make a loop with Byron Road that is about 5.6 miles. The Loop Trail ascends through a lovely pine forest, then a steady uphill climb past some truly massive boulders. The trail featuresthe famous “Fat Man’s Misery,” a narrow chimney squeeze that requires some scrambling. The trail is distinguished by an alpine pond (known locally as Crater Lake or Tumbledown Pond) just below the summit. This is a busy trail system, especially on weekends between 9AM-4PM. Consider visiting outside of peak periods.
