Lamoille Valley Rail Trail (St. Johnsbury Trailhead)The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail is a rail trail located in northern Vermont that stretches 93 miles between St. Johnsbury and Swanton. At 94 miles long, the LVRT is the longest rail trail in New England and connects 18 towns. Trail Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The rail trail’s elevation grade never exceeds 3 percent, making it accessible to a variety of trail users. Trail Type: Point-to-point (though hikers and cyclists can do out-and-back sections from any trailhead). Distance: Full trail is 93–94 miles; individual segments range from short walks to multi-day journeys. Scenery & Highlights: The trail passes through the spine of Vermont’s Green Mountain Range, from the Connecticut River to Lake Champlain. The trail provides a rural setting from the working lands, dairy farms and hay fields on its western half to the wooded feeling and the sugar operations for maple syrup on its eastern side. In the warmer months, the trail can be utilized for walking, jogging, hiking, cycling, and horseback riding. Local snowmobile clubs maintain and groom the trail through winter, allowing for snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, and dog sledding.
