Howard Swain Memorial Forest An easily hiked short loop trail through woodland and wetland habitats, Howard Swain Memorial Forest features approximately 1 mile of trailsand iswalkable by almost anyone with only a few steep hills and narrow ways, making it perfect for all skill levels. The forest is rugged with rocky soil and outcrops of ledge throughout the property, and a short spur trail offers excellent views of Pawtuckaway State Park cliffs and Dead Pond. The southern boundary follows Rocky Ridge—part of an extinct volcano’s ring dike formation—and the property includes the northern shore of Dead Pond, a bog-like fen with floating peat moss mats supporting bog plants and tamarack. The trail is excellent for birding and cross-country skiing, and is open year-round.
