This 3.5-mile out-and-back trail near Lyme is generally considered a challenging route, taking an average of 2 hours 19 minutes to complete. The hike covers 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1,236 feet. The trail is located in White Mountain National Forest. Holts Ledge ascends through northern hardwood forest to reach a series of ledges with expansive eastern views. Holt’s Ledge is a precipitous cliff with fine views to the east. On a clear day, the view from Holt’s is extensive, with Winslow Ledge to the north, Smarts Mountain behind Winslow, Mount Cube behind and to the left of Smarts, and Mount Cardigan straight out to the east. Natural features include exposed quartzite outcrops, seasonal wildflowers, and a mix of deciduous and coniferous forests. The cliff edge is fenced to protect peregrine falcons that nest on the cliff, and Holt’s Ledge was one of the first sites in New Hampshire where peregrines were successfully reintroduced. A blue-blazed side trail leads to Trapper John Shelter with a rustic privy available 0.2 miles away.
