Higby Mountain Trail Head – Meriden, Connecticut This 3.8-mile out-and-back trail is generally considered moderately challenging, featuringrocky terrain requiring some climbing over boulders. A mile-long hike to the top of a ridge on the Higby Mountain Preserve offers wide views to the south, west and north over Connecticut’s central valley, withthe Mattabesett Trail following the top rim along a sheer drop of 400 to 500 feet. The trail descends into Preston Notch with access to a small cascade over rock ledges. Higby Mountain is known for its high cliff faces, unique microclimate ecosystems, and rare plant communities, andis also an important raptor migration path.
