Gulf Hagas Trailhead Often dubbed “The Grand Canyon of Maine,” Gulf Hagas features a rugged and remote trail network along a deep river gorge with many scenic waterfalls. The Gulf Hagas Rim Trail and Pleasant River Tote is considered a moderate hike that covers 8.6 mi, with an elevation gain of 1,046 ft. The Rim Trail passes Stair Falls, Billings Falls, Buttermilk Falls, and Screw Auger Falls, andthe hike takes you through the Hermitage, a 35-acre swath of old-growth white pine trees—some 150 years old. Hiking to Gulf Hagas from this trailhead involves fording a 150-foot wide river that is often knee-deep, and which is inadvisable to cross in high water. Gulf Hagas was designated a National Natural Scenic Landmark in 1969 and became part of Appalachian Trail Corridor in 1985.
