Great Pond Preserve This easy loop trail is approximately 2.6 miles, suitable for hikers of all fitness levels. The preserve features three trails: a three-quarter-mile loop trail, a half-mile path with an observation platform overlooking the 12-acre Great Pond, and a 2-mile trek to a bluff with views of the Connecticut River. The area is excellent for birding, hiking, and walking, withthe pond and surrounding shore teeming with birds, including migrating birds, blue herons, and kingfishers. Notable features includethe largest Red Cedar in New England andthe preserve’s location on the remnants of a 15,000-year-old glacial dam. The best times to visit are August through December, and hikers should note that the trail has overgrown areas and bugs, so bug spray is recommended.
