Governor Wentworth Historic Site This 96-acre protected area in Wolfeboro features a historic site rather than traditional hiking trails. The site is currently undeveloped with stone foundation remains and a commemorative plaque, and is accessible year-round though conditions may vary seasonally. The undeveloped property preserves the stone remains of an extensive northern country estate built just before the American Revolution by New Hampshire’s second Royal Governor, John Wentworth; the mansion burned to the ground in 1820. The site has been the location of an archaeological dig where artifacts reveal details about daily life and work methods of the privileged class of the period. The natural setting features a peaceful wooded area with hiking opportunities and preserves the original well from the estate grounds. The park is unstaffed but open to the public year-round at no charge.
