The Fort River Birding and Nature Trail is an easy 1.1-mile loop trail near Hadley, Massachusetts that takes an average of 20 minutes to complete. The trail is universally accessible and meets Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility stand ards. It is constructed of stone dust with wooden edging and includes eight elevated boardwalks and seven scenic viewing decks with benches. The trail connects people to nature by immersing them in diverse habitats from grasslands, riparian areas, and upland forests. Visitors will encounter wildflower meadows and a pollinator garden where ruby-throated hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees visit, while the refuge also hosts one of the region’s largest known colonies of barn swallows. Along the banks of the Fort River, visitors may see muskrats foraging on the riverbanks or wood ducks around nesting boxes. The trail features interpretive panels that provide interactive and educational activities for visitors.
