Fort Point State Park Located about three miles off U. S. Route 1 in Stockton Springs, Fort Point State Park occupies a long peninsula with panoramic views of the Penobscot River and Penobscot Bay. On its 120 acres, the park features more than a mile of rocky shore, a tidal sandbar, and diverse habitat for a variety of plants and animals. Difficulty & Trail Type: Gentle trails lead hikers through field and forest to rocky shores and historic sites. Walking trails on easy gradesoffer accessibility for all skill levels. Distance:0.9 miles of walking trailsare featured within the park, thoughbicyclists can begin the seven-mile loop around Cape Jellison. Key Highlights: The park includes Fort Point State Historic Site and the Fort Point Light Station, with the remains of Fort Pownall containing interpretive panels and a stone marking the original burial site of Gen. Samuel Waldo. A 200-foot pier provides an excellent vantage point for spotting seals and porpoise in the water or ospreys and eagles flying overhead. Wildlife watchers can look for deer, fox, porcupines, owls, and occasional moose in the forest.
