Dead Creek Wildlife Area Visitor Center The Dead Creek Wildlife Area Visitor Center, located on VT-17, serves as the primary educational and interpretive hub for the 2,858-acre Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area. The visitor center features interactive displays, historical artifacts, taxidermy specimens, and educational programs. Rather than offering formal trails itself, the area features trails and lookout platforms, and in high-water years, a canoe or kayak is also a great way to see birds. The Dead Creek West Branch Trail is considered an easy hike that covers 2.2 mi, with an elevation gain of 16 ft, and takes about 0.5–1 hr to complete. This trail explores a clayplain forest and travels along the water. The area is exceptional for wildlife viewing: a public viewing area is located along the south side of VT-17, one mile west of VT-22A, providing excellent viewing of the huge fall concentrations of Canada geese and snow geese. Resident breeding Canada geese and huge flocks of migrating Canada and snow geese can be found here, along with many species of songbirds, woodpeckers, and raptors, including ospreys, bald eagles, northern harriers, and short-eared owls.
