Difficulty: Moderate. The hike is along a rough road about 1.3 miles from the parking area to the top of Chick Hill, with roads surfaced with rocks and gravel that are steep in some areas, especially as it nears the hill’s top of exposed granite. This is an up and back trail of about 1.3 miles total. Also known as Peaked Mountain, Chick Hill offers stunning panoramic views with minimal effort. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of Mount Desert Island to the south, Katahdin to the north, several clear water lakes, and a glimpse of the Penobscot River. At the communications tower, hikers can walk around it to the left or the right to access granite ledges with stunning views. To the left of the communications tower, you’ll come to a site where an observation tower once stood; today, only the rusted base remains. This is a great hike for families, beginner hikers, or anyone short on time but eager for big rewards.
