Charlotte Forten Park This roughly 25,000 square-foot waterfront park features a plaza for programs and performances, a harbor walk around the South River, swing seating facing the water, built-in percussion features, and green space. Rather than a traditional hiking trail, the park is situated on the South River harborwalk and is within walking distance of all of downtown Salem’s attractions. Salem’s newest green space honors the legacy of Charlotte Forten, an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and Salem State University’s first African-American graduate. A life-size bronze memorial called “The Moving Spirit of Love” was installed in the park in fall 2024, created by artist Ai Qiu Hopen of Humanity Memorial Inc. The park connects to Downtown Salem, the Point neighborhood and Salem’s historic waterfront while paying tribute to Forten’s legacy. This is best described as an urban waterfront park with leisurely walking paths rather than a hiking trail. It’s ideal for casual strolling, historical reflection, and enjoying river views in Salem’s downtown area.
