Center Point Preserve Parking Area, Bowdoinham, Maine This 33-acre preserve offers an easy, 1.6-mile-out-and-back trailto a scenic point jutting into Merrymeeting Bay with wetland views. The walk features a mossy dirt lane edged with a crumbling stone wall, followed bya trail to rocky beaches, a protected cove, and ledges stretching out into the river. Birding is excellent, with opportunities to see black-capped chickadees, brown creepers, downy woodpeckers, bald eagles, and migratory shorebirds. Designated as an Exemplary Natural Community by the Maine Natural Areas Program, the preserve protects tidal waterfowl and wading bird habitat and hosts eight species of rare, threatened and endangered plants. The preserve is open dawn to dusk, and dogs must be kept on leash; biking is only allowed along Center Point Road.
