Centennial Watershed State Forest is a Connecticut state forest of more than 15,000 acres with larger parcels located in the towns of Easton, Newtown, Redding, and Weston. A hiking permit allows access to 17 miles of scenic trails, withtrails leading to “Great Ledge” that are fairly flat for the most part, with some sections requiring modest elevation gain, overall rated as easy. The Saugatuck Universal Access Trail located at the northern end of the Saugatuck Reservoir on Newtown Road in Redding is wheelchair accessible. The forest offers diverse opportunities for hiking, fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and birding. The name “Centennial Watershed” was chosen to honor the 100-year anniversary of Connecticut’s State Forest System and to recognize that one of the main purposes of the land is to protect drinking water supplies.
