Canonchet Brook Preserve, Hopkinton, Rhode Island Canonchet Brook Preserve protects 820 acres of forest with six miles of hiking trails, offering multiple route options at varying difficulty levels. The trails rank somewhere between easy and moderately difficult and feature some extremely rocky terrain. For a shorter hike, the total length of this popular walk is about 2 miles; for a longer challenge, the Ashville Pond via Canonchet Trail is a 7.3 mi out & back trail that takes an average of 2.5–3 hours to complete. Starting from Route 3, the Canonchet Trail climbs gradually through rugged, rocky woods for a half mile before reaching the ruins of an old sawmill and stone foundations for a barn and farmhouse; after another half mile you’ll reach the junction with the Hoxsie Trail, with a return offering views of a nearby horse farm and scenic crossing of Canonchet Brook. The Table Rock Trail features perched boulders and hidden overlooks, whilelarge oaks and tulip trees dominate the forest canopy, attracting a wide variety of songbirds. The preserve contains some of the best examples of Indigenous and colonial-era stone work in Rhode Island, fragile remains of thousands of years of human history. Canonchet Brook passes beneath granite slabs carved out of the land centuries ago. The preserve is open year-round during daylight hours anddogs must be leashed at all times
