Calais Waterfront Walkway is an easy hike that covers 3.3 mi round trip, with an elevation gain of 55 ft. The trail follows the route of the former Maine Central Line to the heart of downtown Calais, Maine, making it arail trail offering easy walking along the historic shoreline of the St. Croix River. This well-cared-for, easy crushed-gravel trail follows the Calais Waterfront along the Saint Croix River, with benches along the path to stop and rest and enjoy the river views. Bald eagles are frequently spotted flying in the area, andthe trail passes the brick Calais Free Library, built in 1892, and features the sculpture Nexus as part of a 200-mile-long sculpture trail in coastal Down East Maine. The Walkway’s gravel surface is about 6 feet wide and of a mostly level grade, making it accessible to hikers of a wide range of abilities and challenges and wheelchair users.
