Boston Harbor Islands National & State Park Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park is a combination national recreation area and state park consisting of 34 islands and peninsulas situated in Boston Harbor. Most islands offer hiking trails suitable for all levels of experience, with trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. Notable locations include Spectacle Island, which features 5 miles of trails including one leading to the harbor’s highest hill with incredible views of Boston’s skyline. Visitors can explore Civil War-era forts, view historic lighthouses, examine tide pools, camp, fish, picnic, and swim. Georges Island and Spectacle Island are served seasonally by ferries from Boston, while Peddocks Island is served by a ferry from Hingham. The park encompasses 35+ miles of coast and shoreline featuring intertidal zones, rocky beaches, coastal bluffs, forests, grassy meadows, and salt marshes. More than 200 bird species have been identified on the islands.
