Bluff Head Trailhead – Guilford, Connecticut This 1.7-mile loop trailoffersmoderate difficultywith364 feet of elevation gain. The most direct route is a foot trail immediately west of the parking lot marked with light blue blazes that reaches the bluff in less than half a mile, though it is very steep for the first 300 yards; a second trail marked with blue blazes has a much more gradual rise, reaching the bluff after about one mile and is much less strenuous. The Bluff Head overlook, rising more than 720 feet above sea level as the highest point in Guilford, offers unparalleled views to the east, north to Hartford, and south to Long Island. The preserve encompasses over 870 acres surrounding the sheer 500-foot traprock cliff and adjoining areas of Totoket Mountain, with several large vernal pools visible in springtime that often contain fairy shrimp and amphibian eggs. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
