Ames Nowell State Park is a 700-acre property with 10+ miles of paved and unpaved trails through forest and wetlands. The main trail is considered moderate and covers 3.5 miles with an elevation gain of 170 feet. The park’s main feature is the man-made Cleveland Pond, which is used for non-motorized boating and fishing. The woods surrounding the pond are primarily pine and oak with some beech and holly, and include wetlands with swampy areas and freshwater marshes. The park’s colonial history is revealed in its miles of stone walls, two wagon bridges, and two quarries dating back to the 1600s and 1700s. The park offers boardwalks near the lake and trails suitable for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing.
